Nothing important to say today,

Just sit back, relax and enjoy.

See you next year.

I just love this concept. A corporate version of Balderdash!

Use it or lose it

Anyone can pick up a camera. But the chasm between someone who takes pictures and a photographer is wide and deep.

Fortunately, there's the Online Digital Photography School to help bridge that gap.

The reason for the season

12.23.2006 by Kevin Creighton

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
"Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Merry Christmas.

It's an honour just to be nominated

I understand the thinking behind Time magazine designating "You" (meaning, us) as The Person Of The Year.

Jeff Jarvis raises some good points on how uninspiring this choice is.

"This year’s cover reveals that the notion — or they would like to think, institution — of a single person of the year in the single biggest news magazine is such a social anachronism. It is a vestige of the mass era. It is the conceit of mass media that they could pick one person who mattered for the world and that we would listen."

I've always thought that naming a "Person of the Year was more for Time's benefit, to fortify the idea in their minds that they mattered, rather than that choice meaning anything to us.

And unless Time's editors have never logged onto the InterTubes (admittedly a distinct possiblity), the people who made this decision have also benefited from the Information Age as much as I have.

Therefore, ithe award should be to "Us". The fact that they don't include themselves with the rest of us in the unwashed proletariat speaks volumes as to how the editors of Time see their customers.

Meh. At the very least, being named "Time's Person Of The Year For 2006" will look *great* on my resume. :-)

Embedded fingerprints

"I am pleased to announce today that we are working with Adobe and Canon to create a solution that enables photo editors to view an audit trail of changes to a digital image, which is permanently embedded in the photograph, ensuring the accuracy of the image."

I like this idea. Very, very much.

And even more heartening is that the head of Rueters is understanding what it's like to be a journalist in a world with blogs.

"The upside of the flourishing blogosphere is that beyond our own strict editorial standards, there is a new check and balance."

The deer now have guns. So you'd better be very careful where you're aiming.

Antiviral?

by Kevin Creighton

The FTC is looking into the practices of "Viral Marketing".

Something that is long overdue, I think. Representing your product as your company is one thing. Lying about who you are is a whole nother thing (Hi Jon!), and needs to be curtailed, soon.

My formal photographic training was in photojournalism, and I learned from some of the best. I love hanging out with a bag of cameras, working and waiting for that perfect shot.

Will there be photojournalists ten years from now
? Does it matter? What makes a photojournalist unique? Sure, training helps, as it substantially increases the chances you'll get that lucky shot. But with amateurs cranking off some great spot news photos and camera phones getting better and better, how long will it be until editors no longer send out shooters to cover breaking news stories, but rather just refresh Flickr over and over again?

That's all for me

I had the priviledge of going to the USS Missouri musuem last month. The Mighty Mo is still in service with the Navy, it's one job?

Standing watch over the USS Arizona Memorial.

Very fitting that the ship that marked the end of WWII is keeping guard over the ship that marks America's entry in the war.

There's an interesting study out on the web about the power of the 'net to bring us together. As online communities grow and develop, we're finding that our inate need to socialize and be a part of something larger than ourselves is still with us. And businesses that neglect this need do so at their own risk.
